Chesed Always Precedes Gevurah
Offered in honour of the Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka, wife of the Rebbe, whose modesty concealed a life that carried a generation. This sicha is given in her merit — on why chesed always goes first and gevurah follows to guard it, and on tiferes, which sets everything in its true order.
I
We find in the order of Hishtalshelus (the chain of spiritual worlds) that Chesed and Gevurah are not merely two opposing forces.
Chesed is not simply giving.
Gevurah is not simply restraint.
Chesed is the first desire of Divine Light:
to reveal itself.
Gevurah is the second desire:
that the revelation should be received within a vessel.
Therefore, when we say that Chesed comes before Gevurah, we do not merely mean that Chesed is "better" or "gentler."
We mean that Chesed is the first utterance of Divinity toward creation.
Before there is measurement, there is influence.
Before there is limitation, there is love.
Before the Holy One asks the created being,
"How much can you contain?"
there is already the inner call:
"I desire to give to you."
This is the true order:
First Chesed, afterwards Gevurah.
For Gevurah without preceding Chesed does not know what it is protecting.
A boundary without light is merely a wall.
Judgment without love is merely severity.
Contraction without the intention of revelation appears only as concealment.
But when Chesed comes first, Gevurah becomes a guardian.
It does not stand against the Light.
It stands at the gate and says:
"Let the Light enter in a way that the world can endure."
II
This is also the inner meaning of the verse:
"The world is built through Chesed."
The world was not merely created through kindness.
It was conceived through kindness.
The very first Divine thought of creation was Chesed.
Gevurah came afterward so that the abundance of Chesed would not overwhelm the recipient.
This may be understood through the example of a father and a child.
A father desires to give his child everything.
That is Chesed.
Yet he does not give everything in a single moment.
He waits.
He measures.
He teaches.
He establishes order.
That is Gevurah.
If Gevurah is born as a result of Chesed, it becomes education.
If it precedes Chesed, it may become coldness.
When the hand that restrains forgets the hand that longs to give, then limitation becomes disconnected from its source.
This is one of the deepest distortions in Divine service:
When Gevurah forgets that it was sent by Chesed.
III
One must ask:
What happens when Gevurah attempts to go first?
When judgment wishes to speak before mercy?
When a person wants to criticize before loving?
When he wants to correct before recognizing the Divine Image in another?
When he wants to say "No" before hearing the request?
Then Tiferes appears.
Tiferes is not merely a compromise between Chesed and Gevurah.
Tiferes is Truth, reminding every attribute of its true purpose.
Chesed can overflow.
Gevurah can close itself completely.
Tiferes says to Chesed:
"Give according to truth."
It says to Gevurah:
"Restrain only for the sake of love."
Tiferes is the attribute that gently takes Gevurah by the arm and leads it back to its proper place.
Not by breaking it.
Not by nullifying it.
But by reminding it:
"You are not the first voice."
The first voice is Chesed.
You are the second voice, helping the first voice to be heard.
IV
This reveals a new principle that may be called:
The Order of Precedence within the Attributes.
Not every attribute that is true possesses the right to speak first.
There may indeed be truth in Gevurah.
Yet truth without proper order may become falsehood in action.
One may say something correct at the wrong moment.
One may offer genuine rebuke with a closed heart.
One may defend holiness with attitudes that themselves conceal holiness.
Therefore it is not enough to ask:
"Is this true?"
One must also ask:
"From which attribute is this speaking?"
And:
"Has this attribute appeared in its proper order?"
When Gevurah speaks before Chesed, it has not yet received its soul.
When Chesed speaks before Gevurah, it gives Gevurah its mission.
And when Tiferes arranges both in their proper order, truth begins to shine.
V
In the higher worlds the order is this:
Chesed is the Divine desire for Light to expand.
Gevurah is the power of contraction.
Tiferes is the recognition that Light and vessel are not enemies.
Creation was not brought into being through a war between Infinity and limitation.
It was created through a covenant between them.
The Light says:
"I shall fill you."
The vessel replies:
"I shall carry you."
Tiferes declares:
"You are both speaking of the same Divine Will."
This may be called:
The Covenant of Light and Vessel.
Within this covenant, Chesed bears the first seal.
For a vessel is only truly a vessel when there is something to receive.
Gevurah has no purpose without Chesed.
Therefore when Gevurah attempts to precede Chesed, it resembles a vessel wishing to exist before there is any Light.
Tiferes brings it back and says:
"Your holiness lies in serving revelation."
VI
This is highly relevant in personal Divine service.
There are people who live with Gevurah before Chesed.
They first see the deficiency—
and only afterward the person.
They first see the sin—
and only afterward the soul.
They first see what must be repaired—
and only afterward what is already holy.
This is an inverted order.
Chabad demands Daas.
Daas does not merely mean knowing truth.
Daas means becoming united with the inner reality of truth.
And the innermost essence of every Jew is:
"An actual portion of G-d above."
Therefore one's very first perception must be Chesed.
Not blind kindness.
Not kindness that ignores reality.
But kindness that sees deeper than the deficiency.
It sees the soul beneath the concealment.
Faith beneath the fear.
The longing to return beneath the sin.
A protected heart beneath the difficulties.
Only afterward may Gevurah come and help reveal that person's truth.
VII
This is equally true in education.
A teacher who leads with Gevurah before Chesed teaches a child to fear mistakes.
A teacher who leads with Chesed before Gevurah teaches a child to love truth.
When Tiferes leads, the child understands:
"The boundary is not against me."
"The boundary protects my soul."
This is the difference between punishment and correction.
Punishment says:
"You are bad."
Correction says:
"What you did does not reflect who you truly are."
That is Tiferes.
It allows Gevurah to speak—
but gives it the language of Chesed.
VIII
This also applies to Teshuvah.
Many imagine that repentance begins with Gevurah:
regret,
a broken heart,
self-examination.
Yet inwardly, Teshuvah begins with Chesed.
Its very first awakening is that G-d lets a person feel:
"You can return."
That is Chesed.
Then Gevurah comes.
The person honestly sees where he has been.
Then Tiferes comes.
He sees not only his fall,
but also the path toward repair.
If Gevurah comes first,
self-examination may become despair.
If Chesed comes first,
regret becomes a gateway.
A person weeps not because he is lost,
but because he hears that he is still being called.
IX
This is also the secret of mercy.
Mercy is not weakness.
Mercy is Chesed that has passed through Gevurah and emerged more refined.
Chesed sees the good.
Gevurah sees the deficiency.
Tiferes sees the person.
Therefore Jacob embodies Tiferes.
Abraham embodies Chesed.
Isaac embodies Gevurah.
Jacob embodies Truth.
Not a truth that chooses one side,
but a truth that places every side in its proper place.
Jacob says to Isaac:
"Your Gevurah is holy, but it must serve Abraham's covenant."
And he says to Abraham:
"Your Chesed is infinite, but it must descend into vessels."
Tiferes is the middle line.
And the middle line reaches both infinitely upward and infinitely downward.
Only a truth that can unite opposites comes from a place beyond both.
X
In the Eighth Generation a new mode of conduct must be revealed:
Chesed first.
Gevurah second.
Tiferes leads.
Chesed opens the gate.
Gevurah guards the gate.
Tiferes knows when and how the gate should open.
This is not merely an order among the attributes.
It is the order by which the world is repaired.
A society that places Gevurah before Chesed builds more courts than houses of study,
more fear than faith,
more separation than responsibility.
A society that has Chesed without Gevurah may lose truth and order.
But a society guided by Tiferes understands:
Every judgment must have its root in love.
Every boundary must explain what it protects.
Every power must remember whom it serves.
Every leader must first see the soul,
and only afterward the role.
XI
This may be called:
The Primacy of Love.
The Primacy of Love does not mean saying "yes" to everything.
It means that even "no" comes from a deeper "yes."
"No—you must not destroy yourself."
"No—you must not harm another."
"No—the world is not ownerless."
"No—your soul is too precious to live in falsehood."
This is Gevurah born from Chesed.
And this alone is enduring Gevurah.
For holy Gevurah does not seek to destroy the created being.
It seeks only to destroy that which conceals the created being from his own truth.
XII
This is also the difference between holy zeal and ego-driven zeal.
Ego-driven zeal wants victory.
Holy zeal wants purification.
Ego-driven zeal sees enemies.
Holy zeal sees Divine sparks in exile.
Ego-driven zeal runs ahead of Chesed.
Holy zeal waits until Tiferes places it in order.
Elijah the Prophet was a man of zeal.
Yet zeal was not the conclusion of his mission.
Ultimately came the "still, small voice."
For even fire must bow before the innermost revelation of G-d.
This is Tiferes calling Gevurah back:
"You are true—but you are not the whole truth."
XIII
This is likewise preparation for Redemption.
Redemption will not come because Chesed defeats Gevurah.
Nor because Gevurah suppresses Chesed.
Redemption comes when Tiferes reveals that both are one Divine Will.
Judgment will become sweetened—
not abolished.
Mercy will become strong—
not weak.
Truth will become loving.
Love will become true.
Then it will be seen that:
All Gevuros are, at their root, Chesed.
Even contraction existed in order that revelation might be possible.
Even concealment protected a hidden light.
Even judgment awaited its sweetening.
Even Heaven's "No" concealed a deeper "Yes."
XIV
Therefore every person should ask daily:
What comes first within me?
When I look at another,
do I first see kindness—
or criticism?
When I look at myself,
do I first see my soul—
or my deficiency?
When I speak,
does love speak first—
or control?
When I establish boundaries,
does the other know they come from care?
And when Gevurah rushes forward,
do I possess Tiferes within me to bring it back?
Tiferes is the inner Rebbe within the soul.
It says:
"Wait."
"See the whole person."
"Remember the purpose."
"Speak truth—but speak it in a way that builds."
"Restrain only so that the Light may remain."
XV
This is the new language of the Eighth Generation:
Chesed is the beginning.
Gevurah is the guardian.
Tiferes is the arranger.
Chesed says:
"Let there be Light."
Gevurah says:
"Let the Light have a vessel."
Tiferes says:
"Let the vessel itself shine."
This is the ultimate purpose.
Not merely that Light should exist within the world,
but that the world itself become a partner in Light.
Not merely that a person receive kindness,
but that he become a source of kindness.
Not merely that Gevurah should refrain from breaking him,
but that his own Gevurah become the power that protects holiness.
Not merely that Tiferes make peace between his attributes,
but that his entire being become a melody of Divine Unity.
XVI
May the Holy One grant
that Chesed always stand at the entrance of every soul.
May every thought first pass through love.
May every word be measured through truth and mercy.
May every act of Gevurah remember that its root is Chesed.
And if Gevurah should ever try to run ahead,
may Tiferes gently bring it back—
in truth,
in kindness,
and in peace.
May Gevurah never be shamed,
but rectified.
May Chesed never become weak,
but clothed in wisdom.
May Tiferes reign as king among the attributes,
transforming every apparent opposite into one Divine melody.
May we merit to see this revealed
within our homes,
our communities,
our leadership,
our houses of study,
and within every Jewish heart.
May it become clear that:
Chesed comes first.
Gevurah comes to protect.
Tiferes restores everything to its true order.
Through this,
judgment will become mercy,
awe will become love,
concealment will become revelation,
and the world will become even more of a dwelling place for the Holy One in the lowest realms.
Speedily, in our days. Amen.
