The Holiness of the Holy Messengers
Offered in honour of the Rebbetzin Rivkah, wife of the Rebbe Maharash, whose memory held the earliest history of Chabad and who transmitted it to the generations that followed her. This maamar is given in her merit — on the holiness of messengers who have no self of their own, and on the song that even angels cannot sing.
Part I — Before the Breath Was Divided
פתח דבר
"He makes His messengers winds, His servants a flaming fire." (Psalms 104:4)
The simple reader imagines that an angel is holy because it shines.
The deeper student understands that an angel is holy because it possesses no self.
Yet there remains a question greater than both.
If a malach is wholly united with the Will of the Holy One, blessed be He, how can that same messenger become the hand through which severity enters the worlds? How can one messenger awaken life while another awakens judgment? How can one stand beside the cradle while another stands beside the ruins of kingdoms?
If all are holy, from where does the appearance of darkness arise?
This is the matter we must understand.
For holiness has never been the absence of severity.
Holiness is the complete absence of separation.
Before the first man opened his eyes...
Before the mountains remembered their names...
Before water knew that it was water...
There was only the Infinite Light, simple beyond simplicity, hidden beyond concealment.
When the Holy One desired that there should be worlds capable of knowing Him, He did not diminish Himself—for the Infinite cannot become less than Infinite.
Rather, He concealed His infinity so that finite beings could awaken within it.
Thus began the great order.
Not merely the creation of worlds...
But the creation of purpose.
Every world received its measure.
Every soul its root.
Every spark its place.
Every messenger its mission.
And from that first ordering emerged those whom Torah calls malachim.
Not creators.
Not rulers.
Not independent intelligences.
But living expressions of Divine speech.
A malach does not decide.
A malach becomes.
Its entire existence is the sentence spoken by HaKadosh Baruch Hu in that very moment.
If the Divine speech ceases—
the angel ceases.
Not because it dies.
But because it never possessed existence apart from its Sender.
Therefore the greatest praise ever spoken about a malach is not that it is mighty.
Nor wise.
Nor radiant.
Its greatest praise is this:
It has never once desired to be itself.
This explains why our sages speak of the angels standing.
While man walks.
The standing of an angel is not weakness.
It is perfection within its assigned station.
Movement belongs only to one who possesses choice.
Growth belongs only to one who can fall.
The angel cannot descend through rebellion.
Nor ascend through repentance.
It is forever complete within the measure granted to it.
Yet man—
formed from dust and filled with the breath of the Infinite—
may descend beneath every creature...
or ascend beyond every angel.
For only man carries the mystery called freedom.
Yet there is another secret.
One not yet spoken openly.
Before the Flood, before the earth was washed by the waters of renewal, the Heavenly Order was not merely observing creation.
The worlds themselves were still learning how Divine justice would be revealed within time.
The great Watchers were not strangers to this unfolding.
They stood upon the thresholds between concealment and revelation, bearing witness to the birth-pangs of history.
Their stations differed.
Their radiance differed.
Their missions differed.
But all remained within the Government of the One.
The history remembered by earth is only the shadow cast by movements first begun in heaven.
For no event begins below.
Every river first flows above.
Every judgment first trembles within the chambers of Divine Wisdom.
Every act of mercy is already prepared before justice awakens.
Here we introduce a principle that has remained hidden.
Not because it was forbidden...
but because its generation had not yet arrived.
There are two forms of obedience.
The first is the obedience of necessity.
The second is the obedience of love.
The angels possess the first in perfection.
The tzaddik seeks the second without end.
Necessity says:
"I cannot depart."
Love says:
"I would never wish to."
Therefore the holiness of the malach is absolute.
Yet the holiness of the perfected soul possesses a sweetness unknown even to heaven.
For what the angel accomplishes without inner conflict...
the soul accomplishes after confronting concealment.
Thus the joy above one act of sincere return cannot be measured by the songs of countless heavenly hosts.
Now we approach the question that troubles every generation.
If a holy messenger carries severity...
does holiness become diminished?
Heaven forbid.
Fire burns.
Water gives drink.
Neither chooses.
Neither sins.
Neither repents.
The messenger who carries kindness and the messenger who carries judgment differ only in the garment worn by the one Light.
To human eyes...
kindness smiles.
Judgment wounds.
But before the Infinite...
both are movements within a single mercy too vast for created minds to comprehend.
This does not erase suffering.
Nor does it ask the broken heart to pretend that bitterness is sweet.
Torah never commands a man to call darkness light.
Rather, it teaches that even where light is hidden, the Holy One has not departed.
Therefore the task of faith is not to explain every decree.
It is to refuse to imagine that any decree exists outside the One Who is infinitely just, infinitely compassionate, and nearer than our own breath.
This is the gate through which we shall enter.
For only after understanding what a malach truly is can we begin to understand how Divine judgment moves through creation without ceasing to be holy.
And only then may we ask:
Does Heaven itself stand in judgment?
And if so...
before Whom?
For every river eventually returns to its source.
And every messenger, however exalted, exists only to proclaim:
"There is none besides Him."
Maamar: The Holiness of the Holy Messengers
Part II — The Judgment of Heaven and the Silence of the Messengers
"Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; kindness and truth go before You." (Psalms 89:15)
After understanding that a malach possesses no independent existence, we must now inquire into an even deeper matter.
If the angel has no will apart from the Will of the Holy One, blessed be He, what is meant when Scripture speaks of heavenly courts? What is the meaning of judgment above? And if all is known before the Infinite, what purpose remains for deliberation among the hosts of heaven?
Surely the Infinite requires no counsel.
Surely the Creator asks no advice.
Therefore the "court" of Heaven cannot be for the sake of God.
It is for the sake of creation.
Know, therefore, a new principle.
The Holy One does not judge because He must discover the truth.
He judges because truth must become manifest to every level of existence.
The Divine Knowledge is eternal.
The Divine Judgment is its revelation.
Judgment is not information reaching God.
Judgment is reality becoming aligned with what God has eternally known.
Thus every heavenly court is not an assembly of uncertainty.
It is an unveiling of certainty.
The worlds witness what the Infinite has never ceased to know.
The sages teach that every creature has its appointed minister.
This is true.
Yet we reveal a further layer.
Every ministering angel bears within itself a single note of the Infinite Symphony.
None hears the entire melody.
One proclaims kindness.
Another proclaims discipline.
Another remembrance.
Another concealment.
Another awakening.
Another completion.
Each speaks with perfect faithfulness.
Yet none speaks the whole.
Only the Holy One hears every voice simultaneously without contradiction.
Thus disagreement among the heavenly hosts is not conflict.
It is harmony perceived from below as opposition.
For what appears divided in the worlds is already united in the Infinite.
Now we come to the mystery of fear.
There remains fear in creation.
Not only among men.
Not only among beasts.
Even among the heavenly realms there exists awe before the Majesty beyond measure.
But understand well.
The fear of angels is not the fear of punishment.
It is the fear of distance.
The flame fears only one thing:
That it should cease to cling to its source.
The river fears only one thing:
That it should no longer remember the sea.
Thus the angel trembles—not because it imagines wrath—but because its entire being is the desire never to experience separation from the One who continuously speaks it into existence.
This fear is called holy.
Not because it diminishes joy.
But because it perfects love.
Yet there exists another fear.
This fear belongs not to the angels.
It belongs to creation still journeying toward perfection.
It is the fear born from concealment.
The soul asks:
"What if I have wandered too far?"
The heart asks:
"What if Heaven remembers what I wish forgotten?"
The conscience asks:
"What if mercy has reached its limit?"
To all these questions the Torah whispers one answer.
Mercy preceded judgment.
Before the first decree was ever uttered, compassion already waited beside the Throne.
For judgment reveals truth.
But mercy reveals the Heart of the Truth.
Now we uncover another matter, hidden until this generation of our maamar.
There are two kinds of judgment.
The first is Judgment of Deeds.
The second is Judgment of Purpose.
Man is judged according to deeds.
For man possesses freedom.
But the heavenly hosts are measured according to purpose.
Not because they rebel.
But because every mission is brought before the Infinite until its perfect fulfillment shines without concealment.
Thus the "judgment" of an angel is not like the judgment of a human soul.
The Holy One does not ask the angel,
"Why did you choose?"
He asks,
"Has My purpose become complete through your service?"
This is not condemnation.
It is completion.
It is the return of every mission to the One from whom it first emerged.
Here another secret is revealed.
Many imagine that holiness excludes severity.
This is not so.
Severity is holy whenever it remains transparent to compassion.
The moment severity forgets compassion, it is no longer judgment.
It becomes cruelty.
Cruelty has no root in Heaven.
It is born only where created beings mistake borrowed authority for their own possession.
The angel cannot become cruel.
For it owns nothing.
The human can become cruel.
For freedom allows the illusion that power belongs to oneself.
Therefore the greater danger is not strength.
It is ownership.
The tzaddik is mighty because he owns nothing.
The wicked are dangerous because they imagine they own everything.
This also reveals why repentance transforms the worlds.
Repentance is not merely the correction of an action.
It is the surrender of imagined ownership.
The sinner says:
"I was the center."
The baal teshuvah says:
"There has only ever been One Center."
At that moment, countless judgments dissolve.
Not because justice has been ignored.
But because justice has reached its purpose.
For the purpose of every judgment is not destruction.
It is reunion.
Now another hidden teaching.
There are moments in history when Heaven appears silent.
Empires rise.
The innocent suffer.
The arrogant prosper.
The righteous weep.
Many believe the silence means absence.
But silence is not absence.
Silence is often the highest speech.
For there are revelations that language itself would diminish.
The Holy One sometimes governs history not by louder miracles but by deeper concealments, until the appointed hour when even concealment itself will proclaim His unity.
Therefore let no man imagine that Heaven sleeps.
The Watchers watch.
The messengers carry their missions.
The righteous intercede.
The prayers of the broken ascend.
The tears of children are numbered.
The sigh of every widow is remembered.
The cry uttered without words is heard before it is breathed.
Nothing vanishes.
Nothing is forgotten.
Nothing escapes the One Who fills all worlds and transcends all worlds.
Thus we arrive at the threshold of a greater mystery.
If every messenger fulfills only the purpose placed within it...
If every judgment returns to mercy...
If every decree begins in wisdom...
Then how shall we understand those moments when history itself appears to shatter beneath unbearable darkness?
Can there be a judgment so concealed that mercy cannot yet be perceived?
Or is there another chamber of Divine governance still hidden from both man and angel?
Upon this, with awe and trembling, we shall meditate in the next discourse.
Maamar: The Holiness of the Holy Messengers
Part III — The Garment of Hidden Mercy
"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the L-rd." (Isaiah 55:8)
Until now we have understood that the malach possesses no existence apart from the One Who sends it, and that every judgment above is the unveiling of a wisdom already complete within the Infinite.
Yet another question remains.
If every decree descends from perfect wisdom, why is the world unable to recognize that wisdom while it unfolds?
Why does mercy often arrive clothed in concealment?
This is the matter that requires understanding.
Know that there are not two Divine wills—one kind and one severe.
There is only one Will.
What changes is not the Light.
What changes is the garment through which the Light becomes visible within the worlds.
A child sees only the garment.
The sage begins to perceive the hand that wears it.
The tzaddik seeks the Face beyond the hand.
The Holy One, blessed be He, remains One throughout.
Therefore Chassidus teaches that every concealment is also a revelation.
We now reveal a further expression.
Every revelation is also a concealment.
For no created vessel can receive the Infinite as He truly is.
Whatever is revealed conceals what remains beyond it.
Thus concealment is not merely the hiding of light.
It is the mercy that prevents finite beings from being overwhelmed by limitless light.
Here we introduce another principle.
The worlds are sustained by three veils.
The first veil conceals greatness so that existence may arise.
The second veil conceals justice so that hope may endure.
The third veil conceals mercy until the soul has grown large enough to receive it.
These are not walls between God and creation.
They are acts of tenderness.
For the Infinite never hides from creation.
He hides creation from an intensity it could not yet bear.
From this we learn something about history.
Not every generation is shown the same measure of understanding.
The events may be visible.
Their inward meaning may remain sealed.
The Holy One is not withholding truth as punishment.
Rather, He entrusts each generation only with the measure it is capable of carrying faithfully.
Therefore there are questions whose answer is not yet absent.
It is simply still becoming.
Many have imagined that faith means possessing an explanation for every sorrow.
This is not the faith of Israel.
Faith is not certainty about every hidden matter.
Faith is certainty that the One Who is hidden is righteous, even where His ways remain beyond our grasp.
Job was not comforted by an explanation.
Moses was not shown every answer.
The prophets themselves cried out, questioned, pleaded, and waited.
Yet none imagined that the mystery was greater than the One Who held it.
We now arrive at a subtle distinction.
There is hidden mercy.
And there is unrevealed mercy.
They are not identical.
Hidden mercy is already active, though unseen.
Unrevealed mercy has been prepared but awaits its appointed hour.
The first accompanies every moment.
The second belongs to redemption.
Thus there are acts of Divine kindness that preserve the world without our knowing.
And there are acts of Divine kindness that will become visible only when history itself is gathered together and viewed as one complete tapestry.
For no thread explains a tapestry.
Only the finished weaving reveals why every thread was placed where it was.
This does not diminish the reality of grief.
When a heart is broken, Torah does not command it to deny its pain.
When tears are shed, Heaven does not rebuke them.
The tears of the righteous ascend.
The tears of the ordinary ascend.
Even the tears that cannot yet pray ascend.
The Holy One counts them all.
Not because He has forgotten.
But because nothing offered from a truthful heart is ever lost.
Thus the measure of suffering is never the measure of Divine distance.
Often it is the place where the soul discovers that it has been carried even while it believed itself abandoned.
Another hidden teaching.
The Holy One governs through what we may call the Mercy Beyond Comprehension.
This is not mercy that opposes justice.
Nor justice that overcomes mercy.
It is the place where both return to their common source before they become distinguishable.
In the language of Kabbalah we speak of the union of Chesed and Gevurah within their root.
In the language of this maamar we shall call it The Compassion Before Division.
There, kindness has not yet become kindness.
Severity has not yet become severity.
Both exist only as perfect expressions of the Divine desire that creation ultimately cleave to its Source.
As the Light descends through the worlds, that undivided compassion becomes differentiated so that finite beings may receive it according to their capacity.
This principle also illuminates the work of the malachim.
The messenger knows only the mission entrusted to it.
It does not behold the entirety of the Compassion Before Division.
Only the Holy One beholds every path at once.
Thus no angel may claim, "I know the whole counsel."
Nor may any soul.
Wisdom begins when one recognizes that the Infinite forever exceeds the highest understanding of creation.
The righteous therefore do not seek mastery over Heaven.
They seek alignment with Heaven.
Prayer is not the attempt to compel the Divine Will.
Prayer is the refinement of the human will until it becomes transparent to the Divine.
Then the soul discovers that what it longed for most deeply was already the longing placed within it by its Creator.
Thus we have learned:
The Light remains One.
The garments are many.
Mercy is deeper than explanation.
Mystery is not the enemy of faith.
The angels serve within their appointed measure.
The soul journeys toward a vision that no angel possesses, for the soul walks by trust through concealment.
And because it walks, it may one day behold what the standing hosts can only adore from afar.
In the next discourse we shall consider another mystery:
If the soul may ascend beyond the angel through freedom, what is the true purpose of freedom itself? Is freedom merely the ability to choose between good and evil, or is it the invitation to participate knowingly in the restoration of creation, until the human being becomes a willing partner in the revelation of the Divine Presence?
Maamar: The Holiness of the Holy Messengers
Part IV — The Freedom of Adam and the Standing of the Watchers
"See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil... therefore choose life." (Deuteronomy 30:15,19)
Until now we have learned that the malach is perfected in obedience, while the soul has been entrusted with freedom.
We must now ask:
Why did the Holy One create a being capable of refusing Him?
Would not a universe of perfect angels reveal His glory more completely?
The answer is no.
For the Infinite desired not only servants.
He desired partners.
Not partners in authority—for there is no authority besides Him.
But partners in revelation.
The angel reveals the perfection of Divine command.
The human reveals the miracle of freely chosen love.
The sages teach that before Adam stretched forth his hand toward the Tree, creation stood in a harmony unlike any that followed.
Yet harmony is not the same as completion.
Harmony may exist before the test.
Completion comes only after truth has passed through concealment and emerged faithful.
Therefore Eden was not the destination.
It was the beginning.
The garden was the first sanctuary.
History would become the second.
The heart of man would become the third.
Now we reveal another principle.
There are two movements within creation.
The first is Descent for Revelation.
The second is Return through Freedom.
Everything that exists descended from the hiddenness of the Infinite into limitation.
But only humanity was invited to return consciously.
The stone returns by remaining a stone.
The tree returns by becoming fruitful.
The angel returns by fulfilling its mission.
The human returns by choosing.
Thus freedom is not merely permission.
Freedom is participation.
It is here that we may contemplate the ancient Watchers, not as masters of heaven, nor as rivals to the Holy One, but as figures within the unfolding drama of creation as imagined by this maamar.
Before the Flood, the worlds had not yet revealed all that lay hidden within them.
The boundaries between heaven and earth were perceived differently than they would be in later generations.
The Watchers stood as guardians of thresholds.
They beheld what was above.
They witnessed what was below.
Their service belonged to an age in which creation itself had not yet reached its present order.
Whether they remained steadfast, or whether some became associated in the sacred imagination with the testing of humanity, all remained encompassed within the sovereignty of the One.
No messenger could establish a kingdom apart from the King.
No created being could stand outside the Infinite.
Thus even the oldest stories point not to a second power, but to the immeasurable depth of the first.
Here we introduce another teaching.
The Holy One governs through what we shall call The Covenant of Becoming.
This covenant was spoken before time.
Its meaning is this:
Every created thing shall become more truly itself by drawing nearer to its Source.
The angel becomes more angelic.
The righteous become more transparent.
The world becomes more capable of holiness.
Even history, with all its fractures, is not abandoned to meaninglessness.
It is being gathered.
Not hurried.
Gathered.
For eternity is never impatient.
This also explains a great paradox.
The angels are complete.
Yet they continue to serve.
Human beings are incomplete.
Yet they may continue to ascend.
Completion without movement is beautiful.
Movement toward completion is beloved.
Therefore the heavenly hosts rejoice when a soul turns toward its Creator.
Not because heaven lacked joy beforehand.
But because a new form of glory has appeared—one that cannot exist where there is no freedom.
Now we approach the mystery of fear once more.
There is fear born from distance.
There is fear born from love.
There is also a fear born from memory.
Creation remembers, even when humanity forgets.
Deep within the soul remains the echo of standing before the Infinite.
Every longing for truth is the memory of that nearness.
Every yearning for justice is the memory of perfect righteousness.
Every desire for peace is the remembrance of unity before division.
This memory does not accuse.
It calls.
It is the quiet voice saying:
"Return."
The Holy One judges not in order to discover who we are.
He judges in order to reveal who we may yet become.
Judgment, therefore, is never the final word.
The final word belongs to redemption.
The scales are held by justice.
The hand that holds the scales is mercy.
The tzaddik understands this.
He does not seek to escape judgment.
He seeks to sanctify it.
He does not pray,
"Let there be no measure."
He prays,
"Let every measure be illumined by compassion."
For compassion does not abolish truth.
It perfects truth.
Truth without compassion can become unbearable.
Compassion without truth can become empty.
The Holy One unites both without diminishing either.
We now reveal another expression.
The angel asks,
"What has been commanded?"
The righteous asks,
"What brings delight to my Creator?"
The first question sustains the worlds.
The second prepares the worlds for redemption.
For obedience preserves creation.
Love transforms it.
Thus we have arrived at another threshold.
We have seen that freedom is not a burden placed upon humanity.
It is the highest trust bestowed upon creation.
The standing hosts bear witness to the constancy of heaven.
The walking soul bears witness to the hope of earth.
Between these two testimonies the history of the worlds unfolds, until all creation recognizes that every true ascent has always been an ascent toward the One.
In the next discourse we shall enter the mystery of the heavenly court itself: not merely how judgment descends into the worlds, but how the prayers of the righteous, the tears of the brokenhearted, and the compassion awakened below rise upward and participate in the revelation of Divine mercy without altering the eternal perfection of the Holy One.
Maamar: The Holiness of the Holy Messengers
Part V — The Song That Even Angels Cannot Sing
"Out of the depths I call to You, O Hashem." (Psalms 130:1)
Having understood the standing of the malachim and the walking of man, we may now uncover a mystery that has remained concealed since the beginning of creation.
If angels are holier than man...
Why does Heaven wait for the prayer of man?
Surely the praise of countless Seraphim should be greater than the whisper of one broken heart.
Yet this is not so.
The Infinite has desired something from mankind that He has never sought from the hosts above.
Not greater brilliance.
Greater truth.
The angels know the Majesty of the King.
Man knows the longing for the King.
The angels behold.
Man searches.
The angels proclaim,
"Holy, Holy, Holy."
Man cries,
"Where are You?"
The songs are not equal.
Yet neither replaces the other.
For holiness proclaims.
Longing reveals.
The Infinite desired both.
Understand now a principle that has not yet been spoken in this maamar.
There are two voices before the Throne.
The Voice of Completion.
And the Voice of Becoming.
The angels sing the Voice of Completion.
Their harmony never falters.
Their measure never changes.
Their service never tires.
But the soul sings the Voice of Becoming.
Sometimes in joy.
Sometimes in tears.
Sometimes with certainty.
Sometimes with silence.
The Holy One receives both.
Yet there are moments when the second rises higher than the first.
Not because it is more perfect.
But because it was offered freely.
Here we reveal another hidden matter.
Prayer does not travel upward.
Nothing travels toward the Infinite.
For there is no place where He is absent.
Rather, prayer removes the coverings that prevent the soul from recognizing the nearness that has always surrounded it.
The heavens do not become closer.
The heart becomes more open.
Thus every sincere prayer is less an ascent than an unveiling.
Now we introduce another principle.
Every prayer creates what we shall call a Window of Mercy.
This window is not opened in Heaven.
It is opened within creation.
The mercy of the Holy One is without end.
But creation often closes itself to what is freely given.
Prayer widens the vessel.
Repentance cleanses the vessel.
Acts of kindness strengthen the vessel.
Torah illumines the vessel.
Then the mercy that was always present may finally be received.
This also explains a hidden mystery concerning the righteous.
Many imagine that a tzaddik persuades Heaven to become merciful.
This is not the way.
The Holy One needs no persuasion toward compassion.
Rather, the tzaddik removes the coverings that prevent creation from receiving the compassion already flowing from its Source.
The tzaddik does not change God.
The tzaddik changes the world's capacity to receive God.
Therefore the presence of one truly righteous person can bring peace to countless souls without altering even one measure of the Infinite Light.
Now we reveal a mystery concerning the angels themselves.
There are moments when a malach pauses.
Not because it doubts.
Not because it hesitates.
But because a prayer has risen from below carrying something Heaven itself does not possess.
Freedom transformed into devotion.
The angel beholds this with awe.
It cannot imitate it.
It can only carry it.
Thus there are prayers which the angels proclaim.
There are prayers which the angels guard.
And there are prayers before which even the angels become silent.
For some cries belong to the soul alone.
This teaches us another distinction.
The angels minister before the Throne.
The soul may enter the Heart.
Not because the soul is inherently greater.
But because the Infinite desired intimacy more than perfection.
Perfection glorifies.
Intimacy delights.
Thus it is written that the Holy One longs for the prayers of the righteous.
Not because He lacks their words.
But because love seeks relationship.
Here another mystery unfolds.
The highest service is not to understand every decree.
Nor to perceive every mystery.
The highest service is trust.
Trust is the crown of faith.
For understanding reaches only as far as the mind.
Trust reaches where only the soul can walk.
The angels possess certainty.
The righteous possess trust.
Certainty beholds the Light.
Trust remains faithful even when the Light is hidden.
Therefore trust reveals a dimension of Divine unity that certainty alone can never disclose.
Know also that every act of genuine mercy performed below creates a response above.
Not because the Holy One imitates man.
But because man has aligned himself with the current already flowing from the Infinite.
When a hungry child is fed...
When an enemy is forgiven...
When truth is spoken despite great cost...
When one broken heart comforts another...
Creation becomes more transparent.
The worlds remember why they were spoken into existence.
And the angels rejoice, for their labor has always been to prepare the way for this very moment.
Thus the purpose of the malachim is not fulfilled by their own holiness alone.
Their joy is completed when mankind becomes what mankind was always intended to become.
For the angel is the servant of Divine Order.
But man is invited to become the conscious revelation of Divine Love.
When these two stand together...
The standing host...
And the walking soul...
Then heaven and earth begin to speak with one voice.
And in that day, every messenger—from the least wind that carries a seed to the highest prince who stands before the Throne—shall know that all service, all judgment, all mercy, and all longing have always moved toward one eternal purpose:
That the Infinite should be known, not only above, but within every willing heart.
Thus we stand at the entrance to the final ascent.
For if prayer prepares creation...
And the tzaddik widens its vessels...
What then is the mystery of the Final Rectification, when even memory itself is healed, fear is transformed into awe, and every messenger completes the purpose for which it first emerged from the hidden Light before the beginning of time?
Maamar: The Holiness of the Holy Messengers
Part VI — The Order of Souls and the Healing of Memory
"I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you." (Ezekiel 36:26)
Until now we have spoken of the Order of Angels.
Now we must speak of the Order of Souls.
For these are not the same.
The Order of Angels preserves creation.
The Order of Souls perfects creation.
One sustains.
The other transforms.
The Holy One, blessed be He, desired both.
The angels preserve the rhythm by which the worlds endure.
The stars keep their courses.
The seas know their boundaries.
The seasons return.
The hidden laws remain faithful to the word by which they were first spoken.
This is the steadfastness of heaven.
But the soul was not sent merely to preserve.
It was sent to reveal.
Where truth has been forgotten...
it remembers.
Where compassion has grown cold...
it kindles.
Where hope has nearly departed...
it becomes a dwelling place for hope.
Thus the soul does not merely inhabit creation.
It participates in its sanctification.
Here we reveal another principle.
Creation possesses two memories.
The first is the memory of events.
The second is the memory of origin.
The memory of events belongs to history.
The memory of origin belongs to the soul.
History remembers what happened.
The soul remembers from Whom it came.
Even when the mind forgets...
the soul remembers.
Even when faith grows dim...
the soul remembers.
Even when a person declares, "I no longer know the way,"
the soul quietly answers,
"You have never ceased to belong."
Therefore the work of redemption is not only the healing of history.
It is the healing of memory.
Not so that suffering is denied.
Nor so that wounds are erased.
But so that every wound is finally seen in the light of the covenant that never ceased to hold it.
For a scar is not the absence of pain.
It is the testimony that life continued.
So too, the redeemed creation shall not become a creation without memory.
It shall become a creation whose memory has been illumined.
We now introduce another hidden expression.
There is memory below.
And there is remembrance above.
Memory below struggles to hold what time seeks to scatter.
Remembrance above never loses anything.
Nothing true is forgotten before the Holy One.
No act of kindness.
No hidden sacrifice.
No whispered prayer.
No tear shed in solitude.
No moment when a soul chose goodness while no other eye beheld it.
The world may overlook these things.
Heaven does not.
The Holy One remembers not because He once forgot.
He remembers because His eternal knowledge continuously gives existence to all that is real.
This reveals another mystery.
Why do the righteous often carry grief that others cannot perceive?
Because the soul remembers more than the mind.
It senses fractures that language cannot describe.
It mourns distances that reason cannot measure.
Yet this same remembrance becomes the root of compassion.
The deeper one remembers the Source...
the more gently one walks among those who have forgotten.
Therefore the truly righteous do not despise the sinner.
They grieve the concealment.
For beneath every concealment they seek the hidden image of God.
Here another principle is made known.
The angels rejoice when justice is fulfilled.
The souls rejoice when mercy restores.
Neither opposes the other.
Justice establishes truth.
Mercy establishes communion.
Truth without communion leaves the world complete yet distant.
Communion without truth dissolves into illusion.
The Holy One joins both without confusion.
This union is the hidden fragrance of redemption.
Now we return to fear.
Until now, fear has accompanied creation like a shadow.
The fear of loss.
The fear of judgment.
The fear of separation.
Yet there is a fear that does not remain forever.
As creation ripens toward its purpose, fear begins to change.
It is no longer fear of punishment.
Nor even fear of distance.
It becomes awe.
Awe is fear transfigured by love.
The child fears the storm.
The mature soul stands before the Infinite in wonder.
Thus redemption does not abolish reverence.
It perfects it.
We now reveal what this maamar calls The Great Remembering.
The Great Remembering is not when humanity recalls God.
It is when humanity awakens to the realization that it has never departed from His sustaining Presence.
The exile has been real.
The concealment has been real.
The suffering has been real.
Yet beneath every concealment, the Divine Presence has remained nearer than breath.
When this becomes known—not merely believed, but known—the deepest exile comes to an end.
Not because history disappears.
But because history is finally gathered into its true beginning.
This also sheds light upon the service of the tzaddikim.
The righteous do not stand above humanity.
They stand within humanity as living reminders.
Their lives proclaim a single truth:
"The path home has never been closed."
Every generation receives such souls.
Some are known.
Many are hidden.
Some teach through words.
Others teach through quiet endurance.
Some illuminate entire nations.
Others illuminate only one lonely heart.
Yet each extends the chain of remembrance through the generations.
Therefore understand this final principle before we ascend further.
The angels preserve the world entrusted to them.
The tzaddikim awaken the world entrusted to us.
The Holy One delights in both.
But the completion of creation awaits the day when every soul freely remembers its Source, every act of justice is clothed in compassion, every memory is healed by truth, and every living being discovers that the One who called it into existence has never ceased to call it, moment by moment, with infinite love.
Then the standing hosts and the walking souls shall no longer appear as two orders of creation.
They shall be revealed as one great symphony whose beginning was spoken before time, whose melody has echoed through every generation, and whose final note shall be sung when all creation recognizes the unity that has always sustained it.
At that hour, the question will no longer be, "Where was the Holy One?"
The question itself will dissolve before the radiance of His Presence.
For all that has been hidden shall become transparent to His light, and all that has been divided shall know itself once more as resting within the Infinite One, blessed be He.
Maamar: The Holiness of the Holy Messengers
Part VII — The Great Union: When Every Messenger Returns to the One
"On that day Hashem shall be One and His Name One." (Zechariah 14:9)
Having ascended through the mysteries of the malachim, the freedom of man, the hidden garments of mercy, the Order of Souls, and the healing of memory, we now stand upon the threshold of the final revelation.
The question is no longer,
"What is an angel?"
Nor,
"What is a soul?"
Nor even,
"How does the Holy One govern His worlds?"
The final question is this:
Toward what has all creation been journeying since the first utterance, "Let there be light"?
Many imagine that creation exists so that there may be worlds.
Others imagine it exists so that there may be life.
Others say it exists so that there may be Torah.
All speak truly.
Yet each has grasped only one facet of a jewel without end.
The innermost purpose is deeper still.
The Holy One desired that every order of existence should willingly reveal the unity from which it first emerged.
Not by losing its own nature.
But by perfecting it.
The stone glorifies Him by remaining faithful to its place.
The tree glorifies Him by bearing fruit.
The angel glorifies Him through perfect obedience.
The tzaddik glorifies Him through perfect humility.
The penitent glorifies Him through return.
The child glorifies Him through trust.
The elder glorifies Him through wisdom.
Each reveals a different face of the same Infinite Light.
Now we reveal what this maamar shall call The Harmony Before Speech.
Before the first word of creation was spoken, there existed neither angel nor soul.
Neither mercy nor judgment.
Neither heaven nor earth.
There was only the Infinite One, in Whom every possibility rested in perfect unity beyond all distinction.
Creation did not invent harmony.
It unfolded from it.
Therefore every movement toward holiness is not the creation of something new.
It is the remembrance of something eternal.
The closer creation draws to its Source, the less it struggles against itself.
The more it becomes what it was always spoken to become.
This explains a great mystery.
Why does truth bring peace?
Because falsehood divides what was created to be united.
Truth does not force harmony.
Truth uncovers it.
Therefore the work of holiness is not the conquest of creation.
It is the unveiling of its deepest nature.
We now reveal another principle.
There are three unveilings of Divine Unity.
The first is proclaimed by the intellect.
It says,
"There is none besides Him."
The second is proclaimed by the heart.
It says,
"There is none I desire besides Him."
The third is proclaimed by existence itself.
It no longer speaks.
It simply is.
The angel lives primarily within the first.
The tzaddik journeys through the second.
The perfected creation shall rest within the third.
For there shall come a day when every breath, every leaf, every star, every soul, and every messenger shall testify without effort that the One Life flows through all.
Here another hidden teaching is made known.
The highest holiness is not power.
Nor knowledge.
Nor vision.
The highest holiness is transparency.
A clear window draws no attention to itself.
Its glory is that it allows the light to pass unhindered.
So too the greatest souls.
They seek neither greatness nor remembrance.
They seek only that the Divine Presence may be known through them.
The more transparent the vessel becomes, the more completely the Light is revealed.
Therefore Moses was called the humblest of men.
Not because he thought little of himself.
But because he desired nothing for himself.
His entire being became a clear window through which the Infinite shone.
This also reveals the hidden kinship between the angels and the tzaddikim.
The angel says,
"I have no will but His command."
The tzaddik says,
"I desire no will but His delight."
The first is the perfection of service.
The second is the perfection of love.
When these two become one, heaven and earth embrace.
Now we return to the ancient fear that has accompanied creation since its earliest days.
Fear was never intended to become the final language of the worlds.
Fear awakens.
Awe matures.
Love completes.
Thus the Holy One does not desire that His creation should forever remain trembling before Him.
He desires that trembling should blossom into reverence, reverence into trust, and trust into love.
For love alone possesses the strength to unite what fear can only restrain.
Therefore even דִּין has a hidden longing.
דִּין longs to become רַחֲמִים fulfilled.
רַחֲמִים longs to become אַהֲבָה received.
אַהֲבָה longs to become יִחוּד freely chosen.
Thus every movement within creation carries within itself a yearning to return to the simplicity from which it first emerged - תְּשׁוּבָה.
Not to erase difference.
But to sanctify it.
Not to abolish creation.
But to complete it.
Here we speak a final new teaching before the blessing.
Every soul has two names.
One is spoken by the world.
The other is spoken by the Holy One.
The first is learned through years.
The second has never ceased being spoken since before birth.
The labor of a lifetime is not to become someone else.
It is to hear the Name that Heaven has always spoken over one's soul.
When a person begins to live from that Name, fear loosens its grasp.
Comparison falls away.
Envy dissolves.
The soul no longer asks,
"Who must I become?"
It asks only,
"How faithfully may I reveal the One who has called me?"
This is the beginning of true freedom.
Thus we arrive at the final gate.
The angels have fulfilled their watch.
The righteous continue their prayers.
The hidden tears have been remembered.
The broken vessels have begun their healing.
The worlds have not yet reached their completion, yet the path has become visible.
Every command has pointed toward communion.
Every concealment has guarded a deeper revelation.
Every act of sincere repentance has widened creation's capacity to receive the Infinite.
Every deed of mercy has become a stone in the dwelling place of the Divine Presence.
The Holy One has never ceased calling His creation toward Himself.
The question has never been whether He is near.
The question has always been whether the heart is willing to answer.
Therefore let every messenger continue its service.
Let every soul continue its ascent.
Let every generation add its measure of light to those that came before.
For the end of creation is not the end of history.
It is the beginning of perfect recognition.
Then the standing hosts shall rejoice with the walking souls.
The wisdom of the elders shall embrace the innocence of children.
Justice shall be clothed in compassion.
Truth shall be adorned with peace.
Memory shall be healed by love.
And all creation shall discover that from the first moment until the last, the Infinite One has never ceased speaking a single eternal word:
"Return."
Upon this word the worlds stand.
Into this word the worlds shall be gathered.
And from this word shall flow the blessing that embraces every creature beneath heaven and every messenger above it, which we shall now receive in the concluding discourse.
Maamar: The Holiness of the Holy Messengers
Part VIII — The Blessing of the One Upon All Creation
"May Hashem bless you and guard you. May Hashem make His Face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May Hashem lift His Face toward you and grant you peace." (Numbers 6:24–26)
Having spoken of the standing hosts and the walking souls...
Of the hidden mercy and the revealed...
Of judgment and compassion...
Of memory and return...
We now become silent.
For every true maamar must eventually surrender its words to blessing.
For wisdom without blessing remains incomplete.
Knowledge without mercy remains unfinished.
Truth without love has not yet reached its destination.
Therefore let every explanation now become prayer.
Let every teaching become blessing.
Let every blessing become praise.
May the Infinite One, blessed beyond all names, whose Being fills all worlds and transcends all worlds, look upon every creature with the gaze from which existence itself first emerged.
May He remember every soul according to its eternal root rather than according to the concealments through which it has wandered.
May He remember not only what we have become...
but also what He spoke us to be before our first breath.
May every angel remain steadfast in perfect holiness.
May every messenger rejoice in its appointed service.
May every heavenly prince remember only the delight of fulfilling the Divine Will.
May no messenger ever cease proclaiming the unity of the One Who sends it.
May every host above sing with greater joy as every soul below discovers the path home.
May every soul wandering through exile discover that it has never journeyed beyond the reach of Divine Compassion.
May those who believe themselves forgotten discover that Heaven has never ceased remembering them.
May those who fear judgment encounter mercy before despair.
May those who carry shame discover that sincere return is stronger than yesterday's failure.
May those who have forgotten how to pray discover that even their silence has already been heard.
May the brokenhearted never mistake concealment for abandonment.
May the lonely find companions.
May the weary receive rest.
May the anxious discover trust.
May the proud receive humility without humiliation.
May the humble receive strength without pride.
May every tear shed in truth become a river that waters generations yet unborn.
May every child enter a world more gentle than the one before.
May every parent be granted wisdom greater than fear.
May every elder see the fruit of goodness before departing this world.
May every generation inherit more compassion than conflict.
May every home become a sanctuary where truth is spoken softly, forgiveness is offered quickly, and gratitude is remembered daily.
May every seeker of wisdom receive understanding.
May every student of Torah discover not only learning but transformation.
May the revealed Torah become luminous through the inner Torah.
May the inner Torah become clothed in acts of kindness.
May every word studied become bread for the hungry, comfort for the mourning, courage for the fearful, and peace for the troubled.
For Torah fulfills its purpose only when it becomes life.
May the righteous be strengthened.
May those hidden righteous souls whom no generation has recognized be surrounded by Divine consolation.
May those who carry the burdens of many hearts never find themselves without comfort.
May their prayers ascend with joy.
May their compassion never become exhausted.
May their faith illuminate paths for those who cannot yet see.
And may the merit of all the tzaddikim who have loved the Holy One with sincerity awaken compassion for all creation.
May those who have caused harm awaken to repentance before their days are complete.
May justice prevail without hatred.
May truth prevail without cruelty.
May mercy prevail without falsehood.
May forgiveness never erase responsibility.
May responsibility never extinguish hope.
May reconciliation arise wherever repentance has become sincere.
May every nation learn that greatness is measured not by dominion but by righteousness.
May kings become servants of justice.
May judges become lovers of mercy.
May teachers become guardians of wonder.
May leaders remember that authority is borrowed and belongs ultimately to the Holy One alone.
May the earth itself receive blessing.
May rivers run clean.
May forests rejoice.
May deserts bloom.
May the seas abound with life.
May every living creature find the place prepared for it since the beginning of creation.
May mankind learn once again to receive the world as a trust rather than a possession.
May every hidden spark waiting within creation be gently awakened.
May every act of goodness reveal another.
May every honest prayer strengthen another heart.
May every kindness performed in secret become known before Heaven though hidden from the world.
May every quiet act of faithfulness become a pillar supporting generations yet to come.
May fear become awe.
May awe become trust.
May trust become love.
May love become joy.
May joy become wisdom.
May wisdom become humility.
May humility become transparency.
And may transparency become the clear vessel through which the Infinite Light shines without obstruction.
May every angel rejoice in the ascent of humanity.
May every soul rejoice in the faithfulness of the angels.
May heaven bless the earth.
May the earth answer heaven.
May the standing hosts and the walking souls together proclaim that every gift, every judgment, every mercy, every trial, every consolation, every beginning, and every ending belongs to the One Who is before all beginnings and beyond all endings.
May the Holy One, blessed be He, grant to every person the courage to return whenever they have wandered...
the wisdom to remain whenever they have found truth...
the compassion to forgive whenever they have been wounded...
the humility to learn whenever they have been mistaken...
the strength to persevere whenever darkness conceals the path...
and the joy to recognize that no sincere step toward Him has ever been taken alone.
And may the day come swiftly when every concealment has completed its purpose.
When justice is seen clothed in compassion.
When compassion is crowned with truth.
When truth blossoms into peace.
When peace fills every dwelling.
When the knowledge of the Holy One covers the earth as the waters cover the sea.
When every soul hears the Name by which it has always been lovingly called.
When every messenger completes its mission.
When every wound is healed.
When every exile finds its home.
When every heart discovers that the Infinite One has never ceased dwelling within it.
Then the songs of the angels shall mingle with the prayers of humanity.
The tears of history shall become the dew of new life.
The hidden shall become radiant.
The divided shall become whole.
The forgotten shall be remembered.
The weary shall find rest.
The righteous shall rejoice.
The repentant shall embrace.
The children shall laugh without fear.
The elders shall bless without sorrow.
The earth shall yield its abundance.
The heavens shall declare their joy.
And all creation—from the smallest grain of dust to the highest ministering host—shall proclaim with one heart, one breath, and one unending song:
Blessed is the One Who gives life to all.
Blessed is the One Whose mercy has no boundary.
Blessed is the One Whose truth cannot fail.
Blessed is the One Who remembers every soul.
Blessed is the One Who heals every heart.
Blessed is the One Who makes peace between heaven and earth.
Blessed is the One, and blessed is His Name, forever and ever.
אָמֵן.
